Meet the new Sony WF-1000XM5 earbuds, a potential game-changer in the world of audio technology.
As I sit here, I can’t help but think about my lost AirPods Pro 2, which now reside in someone else's possession. Their unexpected absence has pushed me to explore other options in the earbud market, including Beats and Shokz. This journey has been quite enlightening.
Sony is gearing up to launch their latest noise-canceling earbuds, the WF-1000XM5, next month. These earbuds promise to deliver superior noise cancellation, enhanced sound quality compared to the previous model, and what Sony claims is their finest call quality yet, making them an enticing alternative to Apple’s offerings.
Section 1.1: Noise-Canceling Features
During a recent press briefing for the WF-1000XM5, Sony emphasized their claim of “best noise cancelling,” supported by research conducted earlier this year using JEITA-compliant guidelines. The true effectiveness of this feature remains to be seen, especially since the AirPods Pro 2 set a high standard in this area. Nevertheless, Sony's WH-1000XM5 headphones are currently regarded as the best noise-canceling over-ear headphones, raising expectations for the WF-1000XM5.
With a reported 20% improvement in noise reduction over the WF-1000XM4, the WF-1000XM5 utilizes six microphones and two new chips—the Integrated Processor V2 and the QN2e—to achieve comprehensive frequency suppression. Additionally, redesigned earbud tips, including an extra-small size, are set to enhance passive noise cancellation.
Section 1.2: Audio Quality Enhancements
The audio capabilities of the WF-1000XM5 have also seen substantial upgrades. The new Dynamic Drive X, measuring 8.4mm, is 2.4mm larger than its predecessor and promises improved sound reproduction with reduced distortion.
These earbuds continue to support high-resolution wireless audio and 360-degree Reality Audio, with the addition of head tracking—a feature that is sure to enhance the listening experience.

Using the WF-1000XM5 for phone calls is where things get interesting. While over-ear headphones are my go-to for calls, I prefer earbuds for convenience. The WF-1000XM5 need to excel in this area, especially with the new AI-driven noise reduction system and bone conduction technology that senses when the user is speaking.
Sony has also integrated a mesh material into the feedforward microphone to minimize wind noise during calls. Their research suggests that the call quality of the WF-1000XM5 is among the best available, and I am eager to test this feature.
Section 2.1: Design Improvements
Feedback from users indicated a desire for smaller and lighter earbuds, leading Sony to create the WF-1000XM5, which are approximately 25% smaller and 20% lighter than the WF-1000XM4. The design retains a sleek appearance while simplifying the overall look.
The charging case has also been refined, now featuring a physical pairing button, which is a welcome improvement over the previous model's dual-press method.

Section 2.2: Battery Life and Connectivity
The battery life remains consistent with the WF-1000XM4, offering eight hours of playback with noise cancellation activated, and a total of 24 hours with the charging case. A quick three-minute charge can provide an hour of playback, and wireless charging remains an option, along with compatibility with certain Xperia smartphones.
The WF-1000XM5 also features multipoint connectivity, allowing seamless switching between devices—an enhancement that users of the WF-1000XM4 had long awaited.
