Astro's Playroom: A Hidden Gem in the PS5 Experience

Chapter 1: Discovering Astro's Playroom
When discussing the PS5, one might instantly think of Horizon Forbidden West, which is indeed bundled with the console options currently available. However, there’s an overlooked treasure that deserves more attention: Astro's Playroom. This charming game comes pre-installed on every PS5 and, surprisingly, many users might not even realize it exists. In fact, deleting it to free up storage space became a humorous trend shortly after the console's release, prompting various tech sites to guide users through the process.
I experienced a pang of regret when I removed the game last week to accommodate the large installation of Horizon. Having played through its entirety, I can attest that Astro's Playroom is a delightful experience. It serves as an excellent introduction to the PS5's features and offers an impressive tech demonstration, albeit with a slight commercial angle for Sony products.
Although the game pays homage to the history of PlayStation, it sometimes feels like a marketing ploy. The gameplay, visuals, and sound design of Astro's Playroom are sufficiently engaging that I didn't feel the need to collect intricate 3D models of various Sony products. After all, I’ve already invested in the PS5. The nostalgic Easter eggs referencing classic games might be entertaining, but if you’re unfamiliar with those titles, they may not resonate with you.
Astro's Playroom originated as a collection of tech demos for the DualSense controller, which have been cleverly woven together into an enjoyable platformer. While it may not reach the heights of Mario or Kirby games, it features four distinct worlds, each themed around different PS5 components, complete with unique graphics, sounds, and gameplay mechanics. Players can also engage in boss battles, unlock speedrun levels, and tackle additional challenges.
With approximately five hours of gameplay, it’s impressive for a game that comes free with a new system. The game frequently introduces new challenges that cleverly utilize the controller’s triggers, tilt function, touchpad, and microphone, ensuring that boredom is never an issue. It concludes at just the right moment, paying tribute to Sony's legacy rather than merely showcasing products.
The graphics are sharp, though they lack the ray tracing effects one might expect from a true PS5 showcase. For those seeking a visually stunning experience within a similar gameplay framework, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is highly recommended. The audio, however, is exceptional, fully leveraging the dynamic 3D mixing capabilities of Tempest 3D Audio and featuring some of the best video game music I've encountered in a long time.
Many articles highlight the impressive GPU-themed song, but I find the main theme medley particularly infectious; I often find myself humming "I am Ast — ro — bot" at random times, simply because it’s so catchy.
While capturing the charm that Nintendo games often exude is challenging, both Astro's Playroom and Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart demonstrate that Sony is making strides in this area. Though they may not entirely replicate the magic of Nintendo’s classics, these titles achieve a similar sense of delight.
Sony frequently utilizes Astro Bot as their ambassador for new technology, showcasing devices like cameras and the PS4 VR headset. Astro's Playroom proves that he is more than capable of starring in his own full-length adventure. This game is an enjoyable experience that you should definitely try before hastily deleting it to make room for another title. However, one must acknowledge that it serves as a glorified advertisement. While it effectively showcases the controller's features and reminds players of PlayStation's hardware history, I am curious to see what this team could accomplish with a fully realized game unencumbered by marketing obligations.
A friend speculates that Astro Bot will reappear when the PSVR2 launches, serving once again as a promotional tool, and I believe he may be correct. This adorable character appears to be destined to always be a showcase for Sony's innovations rather than having his own spotlight.
I genuinely enjoyed Astro's Playroom and believe it should be the first experience users encounter upon activating a new PS5, even before setting up their accounts. This would provide immediate enjoyment, as the game is already stored on the SSD—why not let players dive into fun right away, with a quick option for those who need to set up network features?
While nothing can quite match the impact of Super Mario Brothers as a pack-in title for the NES, Astro's Playroom comes impressively close and is certainly worth your time.
Happy gaming!
