Avoiding Productivity Pitfalls: My Journey to Improvement
Written on
Chapter 1: The Quest for Consistency
Last year, I embarked on a mission to write regularly. Instead of setting rigid targets like three articles weekly or twenty monthly, I aimed for consistency. For me, this meant developing a routine I could adhere to, allowing for some flexibility.
While I mostly succeeded in this endeavor, I discovered several factors that were severely undermining my productivity. Had these elements not been part of my routine, I would have accomplished so much more. Here are the main culprits:
1) TikTok
This app is the largest time sink I’ve encountered. While it’s easy to point fingers at the platform itself, the real issue lies with me. I often find myself scrolling through TikTok for hours, rationalizing that I’m staying informed about current events and pop culture. In truth, I’m just trying to legitimize a detrimental habit—one that borders on addiction.
Despite my attempts to quit, I frequently succumb to the urge to reopen the app. It’s alarming how much time I waste on it. If I could muster the courage to delete it, I could reclaim significant time. But will I take that step?

2) Notifications
Once I became aware of this issue, I couldn’t unsee it. When I’m in a productive groove, a notification from my phone can disrupt my focus. That little ping or silent flash triggers an urge to check my device immediately.
I often stop what I’m doing—sometimes mid-sentence—to see what it is. More often than not, it’s just a trivial update, but the interruption takes its toll. Returning to work after such a distraction is rarely seamless. Fortunately, I’ve managed to address this by simply switching my phone to Do Not Disturb mode before starting my tasks. This minor adjustment has made a significant difference.
3) Dehydration
You might be surprised to see hydration on this list. Are water intake and productivity really connected? For me, they definitely are. Last year, I neglected to monitor my daily water consumption. Though it seems trivial, not drinking enough water had a profound impact on my productivity.
When I became dehydrated, I often suffered from headaches, which hindered my ability to focus. I tried to push through, but my work quality suffered significantly. I would later notice mistakes that should have been easily avoided. This year, I’ve committed to staying hydrated, ensuring my mind remains sharp and ready for writing.
Chapter 2: Reflections and Resolutions
The cumulative effect of these three distractions meant that, despite my best intentions, last year was one of my least productive. TikTok remains my primary challenge. Unlike other social media platforms, I find it particularly hard to disengage from TikTok.
Reducing my screen time will be a tough battle, but I strive to make progress every day. Above all, I believe that consistency is crucial. While it’s undeniably challenging, it is essential for my growth.
