Choosing the Best Budget Razer Gaming Headset: A Closer Look

Written on

Chapter 1: Introduction to Razer's Budget Options

It's Saturday, and that means it's time to dive into the exciting world of gaming headsets!

Today, we’ll compare two of Razer’s $60 wired headsets: the Kaira X and the BlackShark V2 X. The presence of "X" in Razer's product names typically indicates these are budget-friendly designs. But which one deserves your investment? Let’s find out!

I want to clarify that I wasn’t sponsored by Razer for this review, nor did I receive any compensation. I also avoid using affiliate links, as they can undermine the integrity of online reviews.

THE CONTENDERS

The Razer BlackShark V2 X (original review) is priced at $59, although it frequently goes on sale. It’s available in several color options typical of Razer’s aesthetic. Despite its low cost, Razer includes a simple carrying case and a long PC splitter cable in the package. Both the connection cable and microphone are permanently attached, but the ear pads can be easily removed and replaced. The headset features Razer’s latest "Tri-Force" drivers and boasts a design influenced by aviation standards. For more details, visit its official site.

On the other hand, the Kaira X (original review) also retails at $59 but offers a wider variety of color choices. While there are models branded for PlayStation and Xbox, the core headset remains the same and can connect to any wired device. Unlike the BlackShark, this model doesn’t come with a carrying bag or a PC splitter, but it shares the same frame design and padding as Razer’s pricier Kaira models, alongside the "Tri-Force" drivers. Its build is made entirely of plastic, and like the BlackShark, the cable and mic are permanently attached. To see all the available colors, check out its official site.

Chapter 2: Sound Quality Comparison

What’s your preference: bass or treble?

This is the key consideration when choosing between these two models. The BlackShark V2 X is tuned for a powerful and enjoyable bass response, making it reminiscent of other official Xbox headsets — but with superior sound quality. While the mids and highs are articulated, the focus remains on delivering a rich bass experience.

In contrast, the Kaira X offers a more balanced sound profile with slightly enhanced treble. Audiophiles may find the Kaira X more appealing, especially since its treble works harmoniously with virtual surround systems like the Tempest 3D audio on PS5. Both headsets deliver excellent audio for their price range, so your choice will depend on your personal sound preferences.

WINNER: Tie, subject to personal taste.

Chapter 3: Comfort and Isolation

The BlackShark V2 X features an aviation-style frame and deep ear pads, providing a good seal around larger heads and glasses, resulting in better noise isolation. While both headsets are comfortable for extended use, I prefer the isolation offered by the BlackShark. If you’re sensitive to clamping pressure, you might lean towards the Kaira X, which tends to loosen over time due to its more traditional design. Both headsets come with plush headbands and ample adjustment options.

WINNER: BlackShark V2 X.

Chapter 4: Build Quality and Design

The Kaira X is entirely constructed from plastic, which is disappointing compared to the metal reinforcements found in higher-end models. Although the plastic doesn’t feel subpar, it lacks robustness. The BlackShark V2 X, while also utilizing a lot of plastic, has metal supports for the ear cups, giving it a sturdier feel. The Kaira X does have a more flexible, braided cable, which is a plus.

If you prefer a conventional look, the Kaira X may appeal to you more, while the BlackShark’s design is unmistakably a "gaming headset." Personally, I favor the BlackShark’s appearance, so I’m awarding it the win in this category.

WINNER: BlackShark V2 X.

Chapter 5: Microphone Performance

Both headsets are equipped with the same permanently attached "HyperClear" cardioid microphone. This mic type is used across Razer’s gaming headsets and delivers solid audio quality. However, the absence of a detachable or retractable option is a drawback. I miss the retractable mic from older Kraken models, although they had their own issues over time. For microphone samples, refer to my earlier reviews linked above.

WINNER: Tie.

FINAL THOUGHTS: The BlackShark V2 X

Ultimately, the BlackShark V2 X stands out with its bass-heavy sound profile, good isolation, comfort, and slightly superior build quality for this price range. Although the Kaira X may cater to audio enthusiasts, its shortcomings in build quality and isolation are notable.

Razer's budget headsets have significantly improved over the past five years. They used to feel like lesser versions of premium models, but both of these headsets make smart compromises to keep costs down without sacrificing essential features.

While you can't go wrong with either option, I believe the BlackShark V2 X is the more suitable choice for most users. If you’re looking for a reliable budget wireless headset, consider the new Barracuda X 2022 edition, which I personally think is one of the best releases this year. I’m also preparing a review of the high-end Kaira Pro for PlayStation, featuring haptics, lighting, and Bluetooth — but that’s a story for another time!

Thank you for reading, and happy gaming!
