The Challenges of Volunteer Editing: A Personal Reflection

The Journey of Editing at ILLUMINATION-Curated

This narrative may come as a surprise from someone deeply passionate about editing. However, my experiences have led to an important realization about the role of volunteer editing and its implications.

For two years, I had the privilege of editing for ILLUMINATION-Curated, where I found immense joy in the high-caliber, compelling stories submitted. When the publication transitioned into a formal boost-nominating platform, I eagerly volunteered to edit stories eligible for nomination as part of my commitment to give back.

In my role, I coordinated the review process with subject matter experts, acted as an SME in health and science, and engaged in the voting process to showcase our finest stories to readers, particularly those who support Medium at a higher rate. While these responsibilities were time-consuming, I was content to dedicate my time to such fulfilling activities, especially as a retiree.

Despite my dedication to mastering the boost guidelines and assisting countless writers in understanding them, none of my stories were ever nominated organically. Even a few that had been nominated were ultimately rejected. I attribute this to my focus on genuine, real-life issues rather than a narrative of toxic positivity, and I accept this reality with grace.

The rejection of exceptional stories that adhere to published guidelines is disheartening, especially knowing that fellow volunteer editors and I dedicated our time to present the best versions for curators. Over the past nine months, several stories that met the criteria were turned down. We understood that Medium may have undisclosed criteria, and, being a private entity, they have the right to operate as they choose.

While these occasional rejections didn't overly concern most of us, some editors left the platform in frustration, losing faith for reasons they chose not to disclose. I respected their decisions and appreciated their contributions as volunteers.

A Turning Point

In late June, I received heartbreaking news from a close colleague who had been one of our boost nominators. He informed me that his contract had been terminated. Astonishingly, he seemed unfazed, embracing his situation with a lighthearted spirit. However, he soon learned that his dismissal stemmed from claims of poor performance, which left him devastated. Nevertheless, he demonstrated resilience by swiftly moving on to other endeavors, balancing a full-time job with various volunteer roles.

This incident resonated with me deeply and fueled my desire to continue supporting writers. However, as of July 1, 2024, every story I edited and nominated was rejected, resulting in a shocking 0% success rate for our publication, a stark contrast to our previous average of over 60%. This change felt nonsensical and alarming.

In search of guidance, I turned to my adult children for advice. My son, a cardiologist, expressed concern for my well-being, urging me to reconsider my involvement with the platform. He reminded me that the stress I endured could have serious health implications and questioned whether the writers I aimed to help would even notice if something happened to me. He encouraged me to focus on the joys of life, such as spending time with my grandchildren and nurturing my hobbies.

His candid yet caring words struck a chord with me. While I cherish the editing role, the unrecognized efforts were becoming a source of stress. Although I don't seek monetary rewards or acknowledgment, I desire for the important stories I edit to reach compassionate readers who can benefit from them. Topics such as cancer, suicide, dementia, diabetes, and racism resonate deeply with me as a public health veteran, and it pains me to see them overlooked.

Consequently, I made the decision to step back from editing while continuing to support the publication as a publisher, allowing me to publish content that aligns with our guidelines without the editing process. I refuse to compromise the quality of the stories I care about to appease curators who may not fully grasp what constitutes quality content.

Focusing on What Matters

Despite my empathy for the curators, whom I respect as individuals trying to earn a living, I choose to focus on what I can control and release what I cannot. Thus, while I am resigning from the editing role, I remain committed to supporting the publication until my mentor indicates it’s time to explore new opportunities.

The Lessons Learned

Throughout my journey with ILLUMINATION-Curated, I’ve realized that passion and commitment often encounter unexpected challenges. While my experiences have been fulfilling, they have also highlighted the constraints and frustrations of working within rigid frameworks.

By stepping back from editing and concentrating on publishing, I aim to continue contributing positively to the community. Life is too precious to expend energy on unappreciated efforts. Prioritizing our well-being and engaging in activities that truly resonate with us is essential.

For those retired like myself, I have a few words of advice:

  1. Pursue Your Passions: Embrace your interests and engage in activities you love, whether through volunteering, writing, or other endeavors.
  2. Acknowledge Reality: Understand that not every effort will be recognized. Adapt and seek new ways to contribute that align with your values.
  3. Seek Support: Don’t hesitate to lean on family and friends for guidance; their insights can prove invaluable.
  4. Impact Over Recognition: Focus on the difference your contributions make, regardless of external acknowledgment.
  5. Embrace Retirement: Enjoy the freedom to engage in hobbies and cherish family time without the pressures of formal employment.
  6. Value Your Experience: Your knowledge and experiences are significant; continue to share and contribute meaningfully.

Recently, I launched a new Quora Space for the Health and Science publication, inviting writers and readers to share their stories freely. I look forward to collaborating in this new venture.
