My father passed away at the age of 78 due to congestive heart failure, a fate he might have avoided had he heeded his doctors' advice in his mid-40s. Back then, he was pre-diabetic, yet he chose to indulge in unhealthy foods and beverages, dismissing medical warnings.

On the eve of my wedding, he suffered a minor heart attack, mistakenly attributing it to indigestion, and he still managed to dance at the celebration. My partner and I noted his pale complexion, unaware of the seriousness of his condition. The next day, he collapsed and was rushed to the hospital, leading to stent surgeries and a drastic lifestyle shift. He had just retired when he received his diagnosis.

In his final months, he struggled to walk short distances without needing breaks, ultimately passing away peacefully in his sleep one November weekday. His story mirrors that of countless Americans who refuse to listen to medical advice.

An Engineer's Perspective

As a Civil Engineering graduate, I invested five years into my education, followed by four years of hands-on training under licensed professionals. After passing the Professional Engineering exam, I had nearly a decade of hard work behind me, yet I still faced disparagement from individuals lacking similar qualifications. During one inspection, a high-school dropout criticized me for supposedly lacking common sense after I pointed out his shoddy workmanship. His frustration was palpable as he lamented having to redo his work.

This mindset is widespread across the nation, contributing to a growing indifference towards the severe consequences of climate change. Despite decades of scientific warnings, many individuals remain skeptical about climate change, often using transient weather conditions as justification for their disbelief.

As a child, I learned about the ozone layer's deterioration, attributed to harmful chlorine and bromine compounds produced by human activity. I recall the global effort to reformulate chemical refrigerants, and NASA's recent reports indicate that the ozone hole is now shrinking. So why are we failing to heed scientists today? Why do we dismiss climate change as a mere conspiracy?
