Embrace the Chaos: Why a Book Mess is Beneficial

Written on

Chapter 1: The Power of a Book Mess

Instead of neatly arranging your books on a shelf, consider spreading them throughout your living space. Place one on the sofa, another on your coffee table, and perhaps a few on your bed. This deliberate disarray can actually be quite beneficial.

Things Nearby

When boredom strikes, our brains often seek immediate sources of enjoyment—be it social media, television, or snacks. If you find yourself lounging on the couch, your eyes instinctively search for the remote or your phone, leading you to mindlessly scroll through your social media feeds.

Your eyes searching for distractions

As soon as your gaze lands on a distraction, like your mobile device, it’s game over. You’ll likely start scrolling through Instagram or other less productive activities. This cycle of boredom and distraction can occur several times a day, often with your phone being the most accessible option.

What if, instead, books surrounded you? What if you eliminated the temptation of your phone or TV?

The Benefits of Dispersing Books

If you’re feeling utterly bored and notice books within reach, you’re more inclined to pick one up. Strategically scattering books around your home can significantly contribute to your personal growth. When boredom hits, you’ll have no choice but to engage with the books nearby, steering your focus away from less fulfilling activities.

This simple adjustment could transform your downtime into valuable learning experiences instead of wasting time on TikTok videos of animals doing tricks. Picture this:

Books as your only source of entertainment

With books as your primary source of entertainment, you’ll find yourself reaching for them repeatedly. For those who spend a lot of time at home, this could lead to numerous hours of reading each week.

Personally, I’ve adopted this method and now find myself juggling six books simultaneously—one in the kitchen, two in the bedroom, a couple on the couch, and another on the living room table. It’s a straightforward way to incorporate more reading into your life while you relax on your couch!

That's all for today!
