# Embracing the Digital Nomad Lifestyle: My Journey Ahead
Written on
Chapter 1: A New Beginning
Last year, I was thrilled to sell my business and join a new consulting firm, complete with a lucrative salary and equity arrangement. However, after about ten months, my perspective shifted. I have decided to leave this position and embark on the journey of becoming a digital nomad once more, opting to forfeit a substantial six-figure salary, equity, and dividends in favor of investing in myself again. Here’s why I made this choice.
This paragraph will result in an indented block of text, typically used for quoting other text.
Section 1.1: The Growth of My Solo Venture
While employed, I was simultaneously nurturing a one-person venture on the side. To my surprise, the response and growth of this business exceeded my expectations. Since my acquisition in September 2023, I have increased my Medium followers fivefold. My email list is gaining over 100 new subscribers weekly, and I’m receiving five to six new leads for my coaching services every week. Currently, I'm generating $8,000 to $9,000 monthly.
The chance to transition back to being self-employed has presented itself, and I can't overlook this opportunity to fully devote myself to my growing enterprise.
Subsection 1.1.1: Strategic Advice
For those considering a similar path, my advice is straightforward: Do not quit your job right away. Focus on building something alongside your current role, and give it 3 to 4 years to mature. Only leave when your business is generating profit. This has required extensive planning on my part.
Section 1.2: The Travel Bug Strikes Again
My passion for travel has reignited. After spending over 16 weeks traveling in 2023, I find myself craving more adventures. I mistakenly believed that my wanderlust had diminished after my trips to Europe, but I was mistaken. The urge to explore and live abroad has only intensified. Rather than suppressing these feelings, I’ve decided to embrace them.
Not everyone is meant to travel, but everyone should be true to themselves. I refuse to ignore my aspirations, as that would only lead to regret. My plan is to wrap up my 9-to-5 by the end of July, journey to Southeast Asia—where I was born and have family—and build my business while I’m there. Additionally, I aim to learn coding, starting with Python, and perhaps document this journey through a YouTube channel.
Chapter 2: A Wake-Up Call from Family
Recently, I spent time with my elderly grandparents, which served as a profound reminder: Life is fleeting. My grandmothers are 86 and 90 years old, and though they are relatively healthy, they do face some mobility and chronic health challenges. During my visit to Singapore, they urged me to pursue my passions and travel as much as I can.
This advice is not new; they’ve been sharing it with me since childhood. However, this time, it resonated deeply. Within 48 hours of returning to Melbourne, I informed my friends and family of my decision to leave my job, travel, and develop my business. To my surprise, their reactions were unsurprised; I was the only one who hadn’t anticipated my swift departure. After reflecting on my grandmothers’ words, I approached my CEO to discuss my exit.
Though the conversation was challenging, it reaffirmed my belief that meaningful opportunities often lie beyond difficult discussions. If you’re grappling with a significant decision, I recommend confiding in someone with life experience—preferably over 80!
Section 2.1: Unique Circumstances
I find myself in a unique life situation: I have no children, partner, or pets, and my only substantial obligation is a mortgage. This period grants me the freedom to dedicate my time to travel and business development. My living expenses are low; I rarely purchase new clothes or shoes and have driven the same car since 2018. Additionally, my mother lives with me, and I’ve been fortunate to hold high-paying jobs for several years.
Is this privilege? Absolutely. Everyone has their advantages, and I’ve aligned mine with the lifestyle I aspire to lead. I recognize that I possess an unusual advantage that I intend to leverage.
Section 2.2: Not Running Away
I want to clarify that I am not fleeing from anything. My consulting job was rewarding—I worked with great colleagues, earned a good salary, and gained valuable insights into government procurement. However, the allure of full-time travel and entrepreneurship was too compelling to resist.
I am genuinely excited about this new chapter in my life. Moving forward, you can expect most of my future articles to focus on my experiences living abroad, developing my business, and sharing my journey.
