Empower Your Mind: Essential Strategies for Mental Sharpness After 65
Written on
Chapter 1: The Importance of Mental Sharpness
Maintaining mental acuity is a vital concern, particularly as we age.
I find myself in this category and strive to stay informed daily, employing various strategies to keep my mind agile. While I wouldn’t classify my interest as obsessive, it intrigues me that there’s not more dialogue or resources available on sustaining mental alertness.
During my annual medical check-ups, conversations primarily revolve around my emotional state:
- Am I experiencing depression?
- Do I feel low?
- How are things going in my life?
- Am I keeping active?
However, there is little focus on the steps necessary to maintain mental sharpness or the question of "how to stay mentally alert."
I engage in more activities than many, and I feel fortunate to pursue my interests. I acknowledge that various mental and physical challenges can impact others. Here are some of the activities I regularly undertake and monitor:
I play golf, take walks, do light exercises, read, play the banjo and guitar, and pay attention to my diet. In recent years, I've incorporated practices I've read about to bolster my mental stability. This includes daily journaling, writing and sharing on the Medium platform, learning a new language, solving word puzzles, reading extensively, and being more mindful of my diet.
Numerous articles suggest increasing these activities for mental fitness, yet I have yet to discover a comprehensive action plan. Thus, I have taken it upon myself to explore, develop, and implement a strategy to maintain mental sharpness.
While nobody can predict when cognitive decline, Alzheimer's, or other related conditions may arise, I am committed to doing my part to remain mentally alert and enjoy life to the fullest.
