Encouragement for All the Grinders: You Matter in the Game

Chapter 1: The Unsung Heroes
We all know who we are, even if our names often remain unknown.
Recently, I was chatting with a friend after finishing my first 200-mile race. He posed a question that struck a chord: “Do you think anyone actually cares about your extraordinary accomplishment?” Whether you're a runner, a cyclist, a salesperson, or any other role, that question can halt the momentum of those of us who grind away, often without recognition.
"Does anyone even care...?"
This brings to mind the famous quote from Ricky Bobby in Talladega Nights: “If you ain't first, you're last.” But is that really true? Are those who don’t finish at the top any less important? Absolutely not!
In the ultra-running community, this sentiment is celebrated. I first touched on this in a 2021 article titled If Society Were More Like the Ultra-Running Community. Over the past two years, I've learned even more and felt compelled to speak directly to my fellow back-of-the-packers.
This message is for everyone who shows up every day, giving their all and chasing their dreams.
Section 1.1: The Middle Relievers in Life
Being a middle reliever isn’t a drawback; it means you’re part of the game!
A friend of mine, familiar with my experiences teaching entrepreneurship in the former Soviet Union, was frustrated when a large organization took credit for my work and leveraged it for fundraising. He couldn’t grasp why I didn’t try to claim those achievements for myself.
Knowing he was a baseball fan, I framed my explanation around that. “Who’s the top middle reliever on the Washington Nationals?” I asked.
As he struggled to remember a name, I pointed out that unless someone follows every stat, most fans wouldn’t be able to name middle relievers. Yet, these players play a crucial role in every game.
While stars and closers get the spotlight for starting and finishing games, it’s those middle relief pitchers who often secure victories. They remain relaxed, prepared for anything—whether it's just one pitch or several innings.
This dynamic is similar to the middle relievers in our lives, whether you're an athlete, salesperson, secretary, or stay-at-home parent. Your contributions matter, and being in the game is what truly counts.
Subsection 1.1.1: Your Value Is Irreplaceable
Section 1.2: Perseverance in the Face of Adversity
The essence of a fulfilling life lies in staying engaged. I've observed many individuals retreat into the shadows when they feel their efforts go unnoticed.
This is where perseverance becomes invaluable. Just because you haven’t stood on a podium or finished in the top ten doesn’t diminish your worth.
A thought-provoking article titled Staying in the Game by Susan Noonan in Psychology Today offers great insights for those grappling with self-worth. Dr. Noonan encapsulates her message beautifully: “Staying in the game means that you don’t quit when things get tough; you persist, solve problems, and find ways to keep moving forward.”
Choosing to stay in the game is essential for a rich life, and everyone has the power to make that choice each day. So, whether it’s signing up for a race, preparing for a presentation, or making tough decisions, commit to remaining in the game.
I rarely make promises, but I can assure you that if you persevere, life will surprise you, and you may find yourself achieving what you once thought impossible.
Chapter 2: Finding Strength in the Journey
The first video, Grind In Silence, emphasizes the importance of hard work and dedication, showcasing that success often comes from unseen efforts.
The second video, KEEP GRINDING EVERY DAY - Motivational Speech, serves as a powerful reminder that relentless pursuit of your goals is what truly matters.
