  1. Little Secrets by Jennifer Hillier

    Genre: Psychological Thriller.

Marin Machado appears to have it all: a thriving career, a loving and affluent husband, and a beloved son. However, just days before Christmas, her four-year-old son, Sebastian, vanishes.

The couple is devastated, and despite the relentless efforts of the police and FBI, the case goes cold as months drag on without any leads. Fifteen months later, Marin is a mere shadow of her former self; her marriage is crumbling, and her husband is increasingly distant. The only reason her business stays afloat is due to the support of her employees.

Each day, Marin wakes up contemplating whether today will be the day she takes her own life. When she learns that her husband is having an affair with a 24-year-old graduate student, Marin's shock and rage propel her to take drastic actions. Thus begins a dark and chilling journey filled with themes of love, betrayal, and greed.

Why I loved this book:

The plot is masterfully crafted, and the author’s attention to detail adds depth. I was amazed by the authenticity of the emotions portrayed. Even though I tried to predict the twists, I was blindsided by a shocking revelation that compelled me to revisit earlier chapters to find clues. The climax was fulfilling and tied up all loose ends with finesse. If you enjoy relatable characters in a fast-paced thriller, "Little Secrets" is a must-read.

  1. A Dark-Adapted Eye by Barbara Vine

    Genre: Psychological Thriller.

Vera Hillyard was executed for murder, and 15 years later, a journalist aims to reveal her complete story. Rather than focusing solely on the sensationalized events leading to her death, the journalist interviews Faith, Vera’s niece, who was integral to the narrative.

The story unfolds through Faith’s memories and a collection of letters written by Vera. The complex family dynamics are compelling, drawing you in even without the murder aspect. The author skillfully reveals the identity of the victim and the motives only at the very end, making for an enjoyable reveal.

Why I loved this book:

I was drawn to this book by its intriguing title. Barbara Vine, known as the "Queen of Crime," demonstrates her prowess in crafting a mysterious atmosphere without excessive violence. Each page is captivating, and I found myself wishing for more once I reached the end. If you’re a fan of thrillers, this book is highly recommended.

  1. Here To Stay by Mark Edwards

    Genre: Psychological Thriller.

Elliot, a 38-year-old introvert, meets the enchanting Gemma and quickly falls for her. A near-death experience prompts him to embrace life fully, leading to a spontaneous marriage. However, complications arise when Gemma’s parents decide to stay with the newlyweds indefinitely.

Their lives spiral into chaos as unsolved murders plague their neighborhood, raising questions about Gemma’s family. This domestic thriller explores how one hasty decision can unravel your entire life, with a final twist that will leave you stunned.

Why I loved this book:

The pacing is exhilarating, and although the narrative lacks gratuitous violence, an unsettling feeling permeates the story. The conclusion, while seemingly predictable, is cleverly concealed, keeping you second-guessing throughout. Mark Edwards excels in cliffhangers, and this book is an excellent example—you won’t be able to stop reading until you uncover the truth.

  1. Jar of Hearts by Jennifer Hillier

    Genre: Psychological Thriller.

Eighteen years ago, Angela Wong vanished without a trace. Now, her dismembered remains are discovered in the woods behind her best friend Georgina Shaw's house. As the investigation unfolds, shocking truths link Angela's murder to three other victims, all associated with a serial killer known as the "Sweet Bay Strangler."

Georgina and her boyfriend Calvin, who was once involved with Angela, face justice, but Calvin escapes shortly after. A new wave of murders begins, and Detective Kaiser Brody—connected to both Georgina and Calvin—takes the reins of the investigation.

Why I loved this book:

The author's bio hints at a dark imagination, and "Jar of Hearts" certainly delivers. The narrative transitions from a courtroom drama to a funeral, filled with chilling depictions of violence and a nuanced portrayal of its characters. The journey to the ending was fulfilling, and if you’re a fan of serial killer tales, this one is not to be missed.
