Chapter 1: Anticipation for WWDC 2022
June always brings excitement for Apple enthusiasts globally, as it marks the time when Apple reveals new software updates for its flagship products, including the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Mac. This year, Apple is set to announce the latest macOS update, known as macOS 13, during WWDC 2022, along with various other software and hardware upgrades.
The buzz around this year's update is especially strong, with many rumors suggesting that macOS 13, internally referred to as "Rome," could be the most significant redesign yet, featuring both a fresh design language and an array of new functionalities. In anticipation of the event, let's explore some standout features I hope will be included in macOS 13.
Improvements to Widgets
Although widgets have been a part of macOS for some time, their practicality is often questioned. Currently, they provide information such as weather, news, and stock updates, but their functionality is limited. Given that iOS and iPadOS allow users to place widgets anywhere on the home screen, it would be a natural evolution for macOS 13 to adopt a similar feature.
Imagine having the ability to interact with desktop widgets—marking reminders as complete, jotting down quick notes, or adding calendar events. The potential enhancements for widgets could greatly improve user experience and inspire developers to create more engaging applications.
More Universal Control Features
Universal Control, introduced at last year’s WWDC, allows users to control multiple Apple devices using a single keyboard and mouse. While the feature is impressive, there is room for further enhancements in the upcoming macOS 13.
I would love to see cross-device support for the Apple Pencil, enabling users to control Mac applications directly with the Pencil. Additionally, syncing notifications across devices would enhance the seamless experience Apple strives for.
Syncing Battery Status Across Devices
Many third-party applications already offer the capability to monitor the battery levels of Apple devices, but it would be fantastic if macOS 13 included this feature natively. This would allow users to effortlessly check the battery status of their iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and AirPods without relying on external apps.
Revamped Music App
While Apple Music serves its purpose, it lacks polish. If any app deserves an overhaul in macOS 13, it's Apple Music. I hope to see a larger viewing area for live lyrics, an improved search interface, and a more stable UI.
Window Snapping
One of the most requested features for macOS is the ability to snap application windows for multitasking. Users often express frustration over Apple's reluctance to implement this feature, which could significantly enhance productivity.
App Folders in the Dock
Creating app folders in the Dock is a feature available on iOS and iPadOS, yet it remains absent from macOS. Many users would appreciate the ability to organize their applications in folders on the Mac’s dock.
Weather App
The absence of a dedicated Weather app for Mac is a common grievance among users. Given Apple’s success with the iPhone’s Weather app, it seems only logical to develop a similar application for macOS, especially after acquiring Dark Sky.
Enhanced Wallpapers and Screensavers
The default wallpapers and screensavers that accompany each macOS release often fail to impress. I hope Apple will introduce a selection of new, creative wallpapers and refreshing screensavers in macOS 13.
As we await WWDC 2022, I am eager to hear what features you hope to see in macOS 13. Let us know your thoughts in the comments! In two weeks, we will reconvene to see how many of our wishes were granted.
