Finding Fulfillment as a Writer: The Struggle of Silence

Chapter 1: The Writer's Dilemma
The experience of being a writer without actually writing can be quite challenging. I haven’t shared any new work in nearly two months. This comes after a period of intense productivity where I published almost daily for four months on Medium. During that time, I felt a profound transformation within myself, as I not only recognized my identity as a writer but also deepened my appreciation for humanity through the community of fellow authors. Writing became a true confirmation of my calling.
However, a significant life change—a move from the United States to Canada—brought my writing to a halt. Just yesterday, as I met with an insurance representative to sort out the necessary paperwork for my vehicle in Canada, I felt a surge of frustration. It was all too easy to blame her for my sense of chaos, but I realized I had abandoned my writing amidst the overwhelming details of relocating.
Now, it feels as if my entire being is out of sync; like my organs have misplaced themselves. Without writing, I feel disconnected, merely going through the motions of daily life.
Are you also a writer at heart? Do you find that you need to articulate your experiences through writing to make sense of them? Writing acts as a second digestive system for many of us, processing the world around us. Without it, we can feel stuck in a cycle of dissatisfaction, believing that enduring life's mundane responsibilities is simply part of the human condition.
Imagine realizing that feeling lost is not an inevitability! You have the power to choose a path of self-expression that allows you to thrive instead of merely surviving.
The question remains: how can a writer maintain their spirit amidst life's distractions and responsibilities? Many of us set our writing aside to deal with everyday tasks, all the while feeling like we are living against our true nature.
What it Feels Like When I’m Not Writing
When I'm not writing, the disorder of life feels overwhelming—like a pile of unorganized mail, mixing junk with heartfelt messages. Without writing, I struggle to process my experiences, and my mood turns sour.
Being around me becomes an unpleasant experience, as I become a vessel of unexpressed grievances. My demeanor resembles that of a weary traveler weighed down by burdens. Writing is my escape; it allows me to rise above my own distractions.
Even the intention to write brings a sense of calm and purpose. As I sit down to write, I feel as if I am entering a sacred space, regardless of my surroundings. Writing is like an old friend, offering comfort and understanding.
I don’t fully grasp why writing has such a profound impact on me, but I know that without it, I cannot function optimally. The thrill of crafting words is essential to my existence.
Navigating through writing is akin to whitewater rafting; it requires skill and focus, allowing me to float amidst a sea of thoughts and creativity. Leaving this flow would mean losing a vital part of myself.
What it Feels Like When I AM Writing
When I immerse myself in writing, it feels as though I am resolving the universe's mysteries. I become part of something greater, fulfilling my purpose for being here.
This experience is akin to a parent reveling in the joyful chaos of a large family or an animal lover opening a veterinary clinic. While writing may not resonate with everyone, living a purpose-driven life certainly does.
You have the power to redefine your path, leaving behind the burdens of disconnection. The past does not dictate your future.
What steps will you take to embrace the life you were meant for? Perhaps it involves pausing to appreciate the world around you or expressing kindness to someone else. Whatever action you choose, let it ignite your journey towards a vibrant life.
Or maybe, just maybe, it's time for you to write something.
