From Coding to Creativity: Embracing Art in a Tech World

Chapter 1: The Illusion of Passion
For a long time, I believed that coding was my true passion. After all, I pursued a degree in Computer Science, steering clear of Art and Music.

During my adolescence, I was influenced by family and friends who emphasized that careers in Science and Engineering were the way to success, suggesting that Art and Music were not viable paths. At that time, I couldn't identify a single person I knew who made a living through artistic endeavors, leading me to accept this narrow perspective as the truth. While it might seem superficial now, my youthful naivety allowed me to overlook the broader implications.
“Every child is an artist. The problem is staying an artist when you grow up.” – Pablo Picasso
As I matured, I developed a peculiar coping mechanism. When I encountered art that genuinely moved me, I instinctively dismissed it, thinking, “Such pursuits are impractical, so they’re not worth my time.” I failed to acknowledge that as humans, we naturally seek creative expression. Engaging in art can be fulfilling, providing both physical and spiritual benefits. It can offer meaning to some and relief to others, serving as a source of inspiration or simply a pleasure for the senses.

Can you imagine refraining from dancing to your favorite tunes simply because you believe there’s no financial gain? It’s an innate urge to express ourselves, free from conditions. Personally, I won't stop dancing even if I know I could never pursue it professionally. When the music plays, I dance, finding happiness in those moments where I can truly be present.
“You’re only here for a short visit. Don’t hurry. Don’t worry. And be sure to smell the flowers along the way.” — Walter Hagen
This leads me to ponder: why did I abandon so many creative pursuits while still holding on to dancing? Perhaps it was an excuse to evade the hard work required to create something meaningful. However, what truly matters is my desire to change this narrative.
Chapter 2: Reimagining My Creative Path
“You can’t just stop coding and become an artist overnight. How will you support yourself?” — You (likely)
I understand your concern, and it’s a valid point. My goal isn’t to become the next Michelangelo or Vivaldi; rather, I aspire to explore painting and music as hobbies for now.
Additionally, I aim to infuse more creativity into the applications I design, ensuring they are not only functional but also visually appealing, making them a pleasure to use.
Have you ever thought about exploring new paths? I would love to hear your insights.
Until next time, stay curious and healthy.
James.
