Exploring Insights from the Foundations of Humane Technology

Chapter 1: Understanding Humane Technology
Recently, I authored an article discussing the Time Well Spent movement and its relationship with 'dark design.' Since then, prominent design ethicist Tristan Harris has co-founded the Center for Humane Technology, an initiative poised to offer vital insights. This organization produced the acclaimed Netflix documentary, The Social Dilemma, and has now launched a complimentary course aimed at raising awareness about the manipulative practices of technology companies.
I completed the course and found it filled with significant concepts. This material primarily addresses design, but in a manner that diverges from conventional 'software development' perspectives. Instead, it delves into ethical considerations, moral values, and economic structures, exploring their connections to our understanding of technology.

Humanity is Confronting Major Challenges
Throughout history, humanity has grappled with substantial hurdles, but never before have these challenges escalated to such a degree that they pose global threats. While technology can offer solutions, it is also a root cause of many issues. The Center for Humane Technology posits that these intricate challenges require both innovative technical solutions and a firm ethical foundation. Advocates of humane technology promote the idea of prioritizing long-term value over short-term profit, expressing skepticism about the existing capitalistic framework.

The Internet's Influence on Truth
The internet serves as a connector for individuals worldwide. Before its rise, it was challenging for someone thousands of miles away to sway our fundamental beliefs. Now, that has changed dramatically. The reality presented by social media often supersedes actual truth. Behavioral studies have shown that people may contradict the obvious correct answer to align with popular opinion or groupthink, with over 20% of online trends reportedly generated by bots.
"What Orwell feared were those who would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there would be no one who wanted to read one." — Dr. Neil Postman, Amusing Ourselves to Death
China's Approach to Internet Regulation
While the protection of free speech is paramount, what occurs when the internet is inundated with seemingly credible falsehoods? Such misinformation can be accepted as truth by many. In this context, the internet resembles a lawless frontier of free expression, distinguished by the vast reach of technology and the corporations that enable these deceptions.
In response, China is actively regulating its social technology landscape. For individuals aged 14 and younger, video game play is restricted to one hour on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with apps automatically shutting down afterward. TikTok usage is limited to 40 minutes per day, and the platform promotes extracurricular activities through advertisements. Moreover, all social media applications cease operation at 10 PM, resuming at 6 AM.
One could argue that China's past actions raise significant ethical concerns, viewing this as another instance of overreach. Alternatively, one might question whether such measures foster a healthier internet that ultimately serves humanity's interests.
The course offers numerous thought-provoking insights. If this topic intrigues you, I encourage you to explore the full course at humanetech.com. While there is no universal guideline for creating improved technology, the key is to listen, adapt, and evolve products for the betterment of users. In essence, design technologies that honor and support human nature, paving the way for the emergence of humane technology.
The first video, Why We Need Humane Technology, discusses the necessity of creating technology that prioritizes ethical considerations and user well-being.
The second video, How to Tell if a Technology Will Serve Humanity Well, explores the criteria for assessing whether technology benefits society as a whole.
