Chapter 1: Embracing Change

Returning to school has opened numerous doors for me, one of which led me to Medium. Change can be daunting, especially for someone like me who grapples with anxiety. Leaving my remote job and stepping into a traditional work environment felt like a terrifying leap into the unknown. However, I realized that confronting my fears was essential if I wanted to transform my life, and I was resolute in making that change.

During my time working at a bank call center in 2020, the stress levels were high. The pandemic had left emotions running wild, and I often dreaded logging in, knowing I would be on the receiving end of frustrated clients unable to access their funds due to constantly shifting policies from management. Despite this, I persevered by focusing on the kind customers and using my breaks to immerse myself in books or short writing projects that eased my stress.

As the year came to a close, a friend from a physical branch contacted me about an incredible opportunity at another company. They offered to cover most of the tuition for anyone eager to pursue further education, regardless of whether it was within the organization. This piqued my interest; I had long desired to return to school but lacked the financial means. This seemed like the perfect chance.

Soon after, I submitted my resignation and embarked on this new journey that would alter my life, revealing parts of myself I had forgotten.

Chapter 1.1: Facing Challenges Head-On

The job itself was demanding, requiring more physical labor than I was accustomed to, leaving me exhausted and in pain. Nonetheless, I kept reminding myself to reach that one-year milestone to enroll in the educational program. Time passed swiftly, and before I knew it, I was registered for my first class.

The learning platform was fantastic. It was user-friendly, allowing me to engage comfortably with classmates and instructors from home. I chose to pursue a technology pathway, having dabbled in coding previously. The artist within me delighted in the idea of transforming seemingly random characters on a screen into something extraordinary.

As my first class progressed, my professor requested a phone call, which made me anxious. My grades were good, so I was unsure what he wanted. To my surprise, he started by complimenting my writing, noting that attention to detail is crucial for storytelling. He believed this skill would serve me well as I ventured into technology.

During our conversation, he shared his own career journey in tech, discussing fascinating opportunities he had, from working with the military to collaborating with bands. His enthusiasm was contagious, reinforcing the motivation I often needed.

He inquired about my career aspirations, and although I usually find it challenging to open up, I found it easy to discuss my past experience as a chef. He reassured me that technology could intersect with culinary arts, suggesting various scenarios where the two could coexist. His encouragement inspired me to pursue a career that blended both fields.

As my first class concluded, my professor’s supportive words resonated with me on days when I felt unmotivated. They prompted me to revisit my final essay from that class and reflect on my accomplishments. A little motivation can go a long way, and I am grateful to educators who encourage their students to chase their dreams.

One quote from that essay stands out:

"Throughout the years, I felt as if I’ve held a key in my pocket, a key I’ve considered using, but for one reason or another have been apprehensive. Today I am proud to say I have used that key to open my first door towards a better future."

I am thrilled to have finally unlocked that door.

Chapter 2: The Road Ahead

Fast forward to today, my classes are ongoing, and I've been fortunate to encounter inspiring instructors who motivate me, even when my coursework feels overwhelming.

So, how did this journey lead me to Medium? My presence here is undoubtedly a result of the incredible individuals I've met who believe in me. The feedback from my professors about my writing has encouraged me to extend my writing beyond academic settings and personal journals.

In 2023, I pushed through the challenges and took a free online novel writing course. I successfully self-published my first fantasy novel, which now sits proudly on my desk, motivating me to complete future projects.

Joining Medium has not only helped me connect with new friends but has also inspired me to embark on exciting new projects. Each time I click publish, I release my art into the world, and it feels exhilarating.

I encourage anyone feeling overwhelmed or believing something is unattainable to find a system that works for them, take their time, and remember that everyone's voice matters. We are all connected, and your words could inspire someone else.
