# Navigating the Complexities of Mentor Relationships

Chapter 1: The Role of Mentors in Professional Growth

Mentors can be elusive; we often find ourselves needing guidance when it seems no one is available, only to encounter an unwanted mentor later on. The universe certainly has a way of keeping us on our toes! However, there are moments when everything aligns, and we find a mentor who truly supports us.

I've been lucky enough to have two remarkable mentors throughout my career. They imparted invaluable lessons on career advancement and effective leadership. Yet, one mentor inadvertently taught me the most crucial lesson: how mismanaged expectations can derail a mentor-mentee relationship.

This lesson applies to both the expectations of the mentor and the mentee, but I will focus on my own expectations. Midway through my career, I had a mentor who became incredibly significant to me. They taught me the intricacies of corporate politics and how to prioritize the well-being of my team while navigating those complexities.

I learned to lead in a way that inspired me to be a good leader not just at work, but in every aspect of my life. My passion for leadership blossomed as I realized how to do it effectively.

Yet, something unexpected happened in this mentorship: my identity began to intertwine with theirs. By "intertwine," I mean that my professional identity became reliant on their approval and validation.

This dependency significantly affected how I perceived myself, leading to potential disappointment and confusion—none of which were the mentor's fault.

This situation is precarious for several reasons.

Firstly, when your identity is intertwined with someone else's, your internal measures of success become distorted. You might start evaluating your achievements based on their approval, how closely you resemble them, and whether they see you as successful.

Secondly, people are inherently transient. As we progress through different stages of life and career, individuals come and go. Mentors also have their own flaws and challenges they face. Eventually, their behavior might trigger feelings of hurt or doubt, leading you to question your understanding of them. When your identity is heavily linked to theirs, it can cause confusion about your own self-worth.

Your beliefs and values remain intact, even when your professional identity feels closely connected to theirs. If they act in ways that conflict with your core beliefs, you may experience inner turmoil, questioning your identity rather than focusing on your growth.

So, how can we ensure a healthy mentor-mentee relationship? I learned some insightful guidelines from a colleague who shared the same mentor but had progressed further in their development journey.

  1. Mentors are not meant to guide you in every aspect of life; focus on specific areas. When you admire someone deeply, it’s tempting to emulate them in various aspects. However, this can lead to identity entanglement and increase your chances of disappointment.
  2. Establish your own criteria for success that don't rely on your mentor's approval. It’s unlikely you’ll fully meet your mentor’s standards. As a mentor myself, I can affirm that the goal is to challenge you, often pushing you out of your comfort zone. If you base your self-worth solely on their metrics, you may constantly feel inadequate.

Your mentor's opinion shouldn't dictate your self-assessment. If you're concerned that this perspective might alienate you from your mentor, think again. This approach can actually foster a deeper respect as your mentor recognizes your independence and commitment to your own values.

If their respect remains shallow regardless of your efforts, it may be time to reconsider the mentorship and seek someone who can provide the respect you deserve on your growth journey.
