Navigating the Path to Promotion: A Personal Journey

Chapter 1: The Quest for Advancement
In the world of career progression, one might think that doing nothing could be the key to success.
"Why was I overlooked for this promotion?"
This isn't a question I'm asking; it's the concern of my colleague.
Despite not being in direct competition, my peer had expressed a desire to lead a larger department, while I had turned down chances to merge departments under my wing.
At first glance, we appeared to be quite similar:
- Approaching the latter stages of our careers
- Both extroverted personalities who are generally well-liked (though I often prefer solitude, masking it when necessary)
- Proactive individuals who ensure tasks are completed
- Seasoned leaders with experience
So, why was I chosen over them?
The Peril of the Proactive Personality
When tasks need to be accomplished, proactive individuals jump in. You can count on someone like "Tracey" to take care of it.
As peers (for a fleeting moment), when someone asks Tracey if a task was completed, the response is often, "Yes, I finished that yesterday." However, we all know it was completed the day before yesterday.
When inquiries arise about my projects, I might say, "Allen handled that."
"Iris, put together a report."
"Madison will wrap it up by the end of the day."
People recognize that Tracey gets things done. They also acknowledge my ability to deliver results.
A mentor once advised me (many years ago), "Avoid taking credit for anything."
"But…"
"NOTHING. Play the long game. Always give credit to others, even if their contributions were minimal."
"That sounds like a recipe for failure," I countered.
"Over time, people will notice your pivotal role in accomplishments. I could mention how your team will appreciate your humility or how it presents you well, but the truth is, you must think long-term. It will work out in the end."
So here I am, wearing a crown on an undisturbed head.
Throughout my tenure in this role, I've encountered numerous opportunities, including two promotions in the last year.
On both occasions, I endorsed someone else for the position.
(I admit, this is not the norm, and I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it.)
When the right opportunity arose, I took it without hesitation.
I’ve reached a point in my career where my reputation allows me to pursue what I genuinely want.
This long-term strategy has yielded no regrets.
