Title: Rethinking Gen Z's Critique of Capitalism and Its Roots

Understanding Gen Z's Perspective on Capitalism
If you’re in your twenties, I can confidently say I have insights about your mindset that may surprise you. You might be thinking, "That's not accurate." But let’s consider this: Do you attribute income inequality in America to capitalism? Do you believe that "systemic racism" is the primary barrier for marginalized communities? Or do you think that imposing higher taxes on the wealthy will resolve your financial struggles? This article isn’t about proving you wrong or me right, as there’s no ultimate reward for being correct.
However, this perspective seems prevalent among many in Gen Z. The education system, along with their instructors, has attempted to explain the world's dynamics, but what they imparted often misses the mark. The reality is that the world operates quite differently from what many in Gen Z perceive.
Consider this: capitalism thrives in contrast to communism and Marxism primarily because it embraces the freedom of trade. This concept can often be confused with a "free market." But are they truly synonymous? The answer is no.
Freedom of trade allows individuals the liberty to pursue their desired careers. Conversely, a "free market" refers to the exchange of goods and services without governmental oversight. In reality, America does not operate under a "free market." Nearly every industry is subject to regulations, laws, and rules that inhibit businesses from operating without constraints.
For instance, the Anti-Trust laws established in the 1930s and 1940s prevent monopolistic practices, which some might see as a limitation on free trade. Yet, these regulations exist for the benefit of consumers, and few raise objections against them.
How Marxism Functions
Many individuals have only a rudimentary understanding of Marxism, leading to significant misconceptions. This lack of clarity is exacerbated by figures like Senator Bernie Sanders, who often misrepresent socialism and Marxism. Perhaps his age and status in the Senate cloud his judgment.
A crucial point often overlooked is that under Marxism, personal ownership is nonexistent. You can't enjoy a cup of Starbucks coffee or own nice possessions. The state controls all resources. This is the fundamental principle of Marxism. Before you idolize Karl Marx, remember that he viewed humanity with skepticism. His elitist mindset was compounded by personal adversities he faced as a Jew during a hostile era.
Why Is Gen Z Opposed to Capitalism?
To understand Gen Z's disdain for capitalism and American culture, one must consider how their upbringing has shaped their views. Many parents and educators opted not to set boundaries, believing that denying children requests was inherently harmful. This misguided "woke" philosophy equated the word "no" with oppressive systems.
As a result, children who grow up without limits may expect the world to cater to their needs. The most damaging belief is that they are the center of the universe. This skewed perspective can complicate their understanding of self-worth and belonging.
While I empathize with parents who trusted the guidance of so-called experts, it’s essential to recognize that some degrees may not carry the weight they once did. When you criticize capitalism, you may actually be expressing envy over others' possessions and feeling resentful about your own circumstances. This sentiment is less about capitalism itself and more about materialism.
If you’re inclined to reject materialism, I can support that stance. Prioritizing possessions over people poses a significant moral issue. Being unable to sacrifice comfort for authentic challenges can lead to a sense of entitlement.
Interestingly, individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds can also embody the "spoiled brat" mentality. It's a mindset rather than a mere reflection of wealth. For example, when children of hardworking single parents demand more and react negatively when denied, it exemplifies this attitude.
Additionally, it’s worth noting that prominent critics of capitalism, like Bernie Sanders, possess substantial wealth. He owns three homes and has an estimated net worth of three million dollars. Similarly, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez enjoys significant privileges while traveling worldwide, seemingly unfazed by her critiques of capitalism.
