The genesis of the current crisis in American politics isn't merely the stark divisions between political affiliations. Historically, access to information was confined to local communities, with wandering minstrels and merchants being the primary conveyors of news and entertainment. The pathways for disseminating information were clearly defined.
The only written records that existed were tax and religious documents, which meant there was a significant degree of control over the information shared. The proximity to the source dictated its reliability, with monarchs and priests acting as the ultimate arbiters of knowledge.
The invention of the printing press by Gutenberg shattered this monopoly on information. Suddenly, the general populace could access and interpret texts themselves, leading to a more democratized spread of knowledge. However, the prevailing belief persisted: if something was written down, it must be true—after all, writing was an expensive endeavor.

Yet, even in the 1960s, this neutrality was questioned, as exemplified by the character J. Jonah Jameson in Spider-Man comics.

As a result, the indicators of reliable information have all but disappeared. The search for accountability has led to widespread blame directed at various entities.
In the realm of science, the integrity of research has also been compromised. The rush to publish findings, often driven by tenure requirements, led to a proliferation of journals with minimal peer review standards. This has resulted in a confusing barrage of conflicting studies, undermining public trust in scientific claims.
