# The Importance of Support in Overcoming Alcohol Addiction

Chapter 1: My Journey to Sobriety

Nearly four years ago, I made the decision to stop drinking. Leading up to this pivotal moment, I spent two years contemplating the idea of quitting. Ironically, during this time, my alcohol consumption increased. It felt as though I was subconsciously trying to reach a point of disgust with alcohol that would compel me to stop drinking altogether. While I didn’t consciously plan for this, looking back, it raises questions.

Throughout this period, I invested heavily in literature by former drinkers who shared their poignant stories, offered advice, and extended empathy. Surprisingly, this approach proved effective, although it wasn’t an instantaneous fix. Two years is a substantial amount of time to both drink and read.

My literary exploration became my primary source of support. If you're interested in the books that helped me reclaim my life from alcohol, feel free to check out my article titled “10 Outstanding Books to Help You Stay Fully Engaged in Your Sobriety,” published on Alcohol Is Not Your Friend on February 8, 2022.

Section 1.1: The Role of Encouragement

My husband, Bill, did not believe I needed to quit. He thought my drinking habits were not severe enough to warrant concern. While he never criticized my desire to stop, he also didn’t offer the support or understanding I needed. Bill enjoyed drinking and appreciated that I did as well.

Having someone to cheer you on in your journey toward sobriety would undoubtedly be beneficial. However, it is not an absolute requirement. Ultimately, the motivation and desire to be free from alcohol must come from within. Perhaps if Bill had been more supportive, my journey could have been shorter. Nevertheless, I achieved sobriety regardless of his stance.

During those two years, I managed to abstain from alcohol for a couple of months on two separate occasions.

Subsection 1.1.1: Finding Help

After a month or two of sobriety, I discovered SMART Recovery meetings, which proved to be quite beneficial. Hearing about the challenges others faced with addiction and their triumphs was encouraging. This sense of community provided the support I had longed for.

I also subscribed to various newsletters, including Soberistas, Recovery Elevator, Hip Sobriety (now the Tempest, recently acquired by Monument), and This Naked Mind. These resources were incredibly reassuring and offered valuable insights and strategies. I often wonder if I could have achieved freedom from alcohol sooner had I explored these options earlier.

I kept my decision to quit drinking mostly to myself—only sharing it with my husband—until I felt more confident in my sobriety. If you seek support, consider these resources, but you may want to keep your journey private from family and friends. What works for me may not necessarily work for you.

Section 1.2: Misunderstanding Addiction

One significant lesson I learned during my initial failed attempts at sobriety is that many people lack a true understanding of addiction. A family member once innocently suggested I could have “just one drink.” This seemingly harmless comment led me back down a path of drinking. I take full responsibility for that relapse; at that time, I simply wasn’t strong enough or ready to quit.

Now, I am determined to remain sober for the rest of my life. I’ve reached a point where no one even dares to suggest I have a drink. Perhaps I now exude a sense of certainty about my sobriety, making it clear that I have no interest in drinking.

While support can be beneficial for some, the path to achieving and maintaining sobriety ultimately rests in your hands.
