Unlocking Income Potential: Why Top Writers Leave Medium

The Departure of a Medium Legend
Recently, you might have come across the news about Nick Wignall, a renowned writer on Medium, who has decided to erase all his content and exit the platform for good. This raises a pivotal question: why did he take such a drastic step? In his farewell article, he stated:
“Over the past 6–12 months, my earnings from the partner program and content distribution have significantly declined, with no signs of improvement.”
He isn’t the only one feeling this way. Having been on Medium for eight years, I've observed that many top writers have also departed. Nowadays, I primarily share my newsletters on Medium without any effort to grow my presence on the platform.
For novice writers aiming to make a few hundred dollars monthly, Medium might seem adequate. However, the era of earning $10,000 or even $5,000 monthly on Medium has come to an end. It’s simply no longer feasible.
The platform has shifted its strategy to distribute earnings more evenly among writers. While this is a commendable goal, it doesn’t bode well for those writers looking to generate a significant income.
If writing is just a hobby for you, feel free to skip the rest of this message. But for those who aspire to earn a substantial income from their writing, here’s a crucial point to consider:
You need a supporting business model behind your writing if you wish to earn $10K or more monthly.
Understanding the Shift
I know Nick personally; he even spoke to students in my community. I understand why he was comfortable leaving Medium and letting go of his royalty income—it's the same reason I did. Nick has developed a product line centered around his writing and expertise as a psychologist. He wisely built an email newsletter boasting over 40,000 subscribers, which is where the real income lies. He also offers a range of workshops and courses that generate ten times the revenue he would earn from constantly producing articles.
My business operates similarly. Medium accounts for less than 5% of my income, which ranges from $30,000 to $50,000. My earnings stem from creating and marketing offers.
This approach has worked in the self-improvement niche, which many believe is challenging to monetize. I’m now applying it to the writing and business sectors. It’s possible to achieve this across various niches, and every writer can find a pathway to lucrative opportunities.
To achieve significant revenue, you must invest time in acquiring knowledge, skills, and content in one of the four primary areas: Health, Wealth, Love, or Relationships. Alternatively, you might want to focus on mastering a profitable writing skill, such as copywriting or creating educational email courses, which can be sold for $2,000 or more. This is particularly beneficial if your topic doesn’t fit into one of the "Big 4" categories.
Crafting a Sustainable Writing Career
There are two types of writers: those who write for pleasure without concern for profits and those who have greater ambitions. The latter group understands the importance of earning a living from their craft. We love writing, but we also want to afford a lifestyle that allows us to create freely, with more time and financial resources to invest in our passions.
This is the beauty of establishing a sustainable business model. When you’re not reliant on direct income from your articles, you can return to writing purely for enjoyment. In the past, I sometimes felt compelled to produce specific articles solely for financial reasons, which diminished my enjoyment of writing.
Now, with a business generating recurring monthly revenue, there’s no pressure to chase viral content. Thanks to my new business model, I don’t need to go viral or attract a massive audience to earn a decent income.
This approach is particularly effective for writers with smaller audiences. You only need to convert a handful of individuals each month to achieve a $10,000 to $20,000 income. Even if you’re not adept at marketing or sales, you can follow straightforward scripts I’ve developed to land high-value clients. I’ve even shared the exact conversations that led to closing deals.
Initially, I was doubtful that these methods would work for everyone, but I’ve successfully guided students, even those lacking sales skills, to land clients. The key isn’t in being a skilled salesperson; it's about crafting the right offer that resonates with the right audience. Nail the offer, and everything else will follow.
