Unlocking Your True Self: Steps to Authenticity and Self-Image
Written on
Chapter 1: Understanding Authenticity
Authenticity involves closing the gap between your inner beliefs and your external expression. As Adam Grant aptly puts it, "Authenticity means erasing the gap between what you firmly believe inside and what you reveal to the outside world."
In today’s world, we are inundated with messages from various media outlets—television, radio, newspapers, smartphones, and advertisements. It can feel like there are signs everywhere, shaping our thoughts and behaviors.
However, take a moment to step back. Focus not on these external influences but on yourself. I urge you to look inward. I’m referring to your genuine self, not the version you present to society.
Your self-image encompasses how you perceive yourself. You may define yourself through roles like parent, professional, or friend, but you are much more than those labels. You are unique, with individual traits that set you apart.
When your actions resonate with your true self, you are living authentically. Unfortunately, many individuals perceive themselves in one light while behaving in another. Authentic individuals, on the other hand, act with honesty and integrity. The rewards of this alignment include greater success, self-worth, respect from others, and inner tranquility.
Conversely, those who are out of sync with their values often experience heightened anxiety, guilt, and shame. While it may appear easier to conform to others' expectations in the short term, the long-term consequences can be profound.
Steps to Discover Your Authentic Self:
Identify Your Core Values.
Your values represent your guiding principles—what you deem significant in life. A genuine self-image aligns with these values. Understanding what matters to you can lead to a more fulfilling and meaningful existence.
Start by listing your values.
- Narrow it down to your top ten values.
Assess for Conflicts.
You may find your values in conflict. For instance, if adventure and freedom are priorities but you also value responsibility and security, you may face inner turmoil.
Consider whether any values you hold are not truly your own but are instead influenced by your upbringing. It’s crucial to establish your own values independent of societal expectations.
Create Action Plans for Each Value.
For example, if frugality is one of your values, develop a budget and savings strategy. You might plan to use coupons, shop at thrift stores, or seek out free activities on weekends.
Reflect Daily.
At the end of each day, evaluate times when you strayed from your values and instances when you adhered to them, especially during challenging situations.
To summarize, create a self-image that aligns with your values. Identify these values, then cultivate a lifestyle that enables you to live them consistently.
Authenticity may not always be the simplest path, but the rewards are immense. What values resonate with you?
"That inner voice has both gentleness and clarity. To achieve authenticity, you must delve deeply into honesty and the essence of your being." - Meredith Monk
