Building Unshakable Confidence: The Power of Action Over Preparation
Written on
Chapter 1: Understanding Confidence
Confidence is often visible in how individuals carry themselves, engage in conversation, write, and connect with others. Many professionals, including psychologists and life coaches, emphasize the importance of cultivating this often-elusive trait. Noted author Tony Robbins asserts, “Confidence isn't something you possess; it’s something you develop.”
A fundamental aspect of building confidence is preparation. It is essential for achieving success in various endeavors, whether coaching a sports team, preparing for a job interview, or crafting an article. Being unprepared can suggest a lack of commitment or interest, which frequently results in mediocre outcomes.
However, over-preparation can undermine your confidence.

Taking Action: The Key to Confidence
Engaging in new experiences can be daunting, yet confidence is crucial, and the only way to cultivate it is to take the plunge and start. Just as a toddler learns to walk by repeatedly trying, falling, and getting back up, adults must embrace similar resilience. As we grow, we often develop fears and self-doubts that hinder our progress. Stepping outside of our comfort zone is essential for building confidence.
Preparation: A Double-Edged Sword
While preparation is vital, an overwhelming desire to be ready can lead to stagnation. For instance, my aspiration to write online was stifled by my fear of inadequacy for five long years. I kept deferring my efforts, believing I needed to gather more knowledge first. The truth is, I would never feel completely knowledgeable.
This waiting game only left me feeling unqualified and uncertain, creating a detrimental cycle of self-doubt. I often found myself comparing my journey to others who were actively pursuing their ambitions, which further eroded my confidence.
You cannot cultivate confidence in an area until you fully immerse yourself in it.
Over-Preparation and Perfectionism
“Done is better than perfect.” - Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Meta
An intense desire for perfection can obstruct progress, leading to what is often termed "analysis paralysis." As I prepare to submit this article, I recognize that I am stepping beyond my comfort zone. I could remain in this chair for an indefinite time, waiting to feel prepared. Consuming countless articles from successful Medium writers has been enlightening, but my thirst for knowledge feels insatiable.
I keep telling myself that with just a bit more reading, I might finally be ready. Yet, deep down, I understand that readiness is a myth; I will always have room for improvement. Nevertheless, I am determined to press forward and learn—this is an essential step toward enhancing my confidence.
You are the agent of change in your life. Taking action is critical to your development. Setting clear goals and maintaining a positive mindset are pivotal to achieving success. However, devising a plan and executing it despite obstacles or uncertainties will truly bolster your confidence.
Prepare, but also be ready to leap into the unknown. You will never feel entirely prepared. Don't allow fear and the pursuit of perfection to impede your progress toward your aspirations.
