Crafting a Life of Purpose: Embracing Test-Driven Living

Chapter 1: The Concept of Test-Driven Living
Can we truly outline the life we desire before embarking on that journey?
Test-Driven Approach in Software
In the realm of software development, the test-driven methodology emphasizes the importance of writing tests for a program before its actual creation. While this concept may seem straightforward, it can be quite enlightening upon first encounter. How can we evaluate something that hasn't yet been created? However, there's no need for philosophical musings over simple abstractions. For example, if I were tasked with constructing a guitar, I'd recognize that it requires six strings, with the first and sixth strings tuned to E notes in different octaves. Although testing occurs at the conclusion, the criteria for success were established long before.
The Scientific Method
Most individuals with a basic education are likely familiar with the scientific method. This concept mirrors our previous discussion: we form hypotheses that can evolve into theories once validated. We compile existing knowledge, make connections, articulate our expectations for the outcomes of our tests, design the tests, and finally document the results. It’s imprudent to hold beliefs without evidence; rather, science advises against accepting anything unproven. While matters become more complex in spiritual contexts, the approach remains valid for tangible issues.
Chronic Life Crises
I do not claim to be an authority on science, technology, or — heaven forbid! — religion. The aim of this article is considerably more modest. The test-driven software development model prompted me to reflect on how we might apply similar principles to our daily lives. It’s astonishing how much time we squander simply going through the motions, adhering to routines without questioning them, drifting aimlessly, or worse, allowing life to dictate our actions. For example, have you observed how mid-life crises have transformed into widespread existential crises? It seems that many experience this sense of disillusionment even before reaching twenty! The current climate is so overwhelming, with endless possibilities stretching our focus thin, that we often establish a lifestyle without ever contemplating the kind of life we genuinely wish to lead. Then, when we finally arrive at our desired life and it fails to meet our expectations—whether regarding income, climate, or job satisfaction—we become uneasy.
Why Not Take Control?
It would be far more beneficial to determine our goals first and then take deliberate steps toward achieving them. So, why don’t we? Because although this approach is superior, it’s not necessarily simpler. It’s much easier to act and face the repercussions of those actions than to pause, reflect, and then proceed thoughtfully.
Current Mood: Pessimistic Optimism at 60%
Listening to: The nearby hum of traffic, the distant roar of an airplane, and the chirping of birds.
