Overcoming the Fear of Submission: A Writer's Journey
Written on
Chapter 1: Understanding the Fear of Querying
As a writer, I constantly find myself with multiple browser tabs open, each displaying submission guidelines for various publications. These tabs tend to linger until I grow weary of them and close them permanently, only to return at a later date, fueled by enthusiasm to share my brilliant ideas with the world. However, I often end up doing nothing; I simply hit the close button once more.
What’s the issue here? The answer is simple: I’m a writer. I dedicate a good portion of my week to crafting articles that I take pride in, which gives me a brief sense of accomplishment. Yet, the other half of my week is consumed by self-doubt, making me feel like a fraud. Am I truly an imposter, or is it just a label I’ve adopted? I suspect many writers share this sentiment.
Chapter 1.1: The Paralyzing Fear of Rejection
For some inexplicable reason, I struggle to take that first step and submit my work to publications, particularly print magazines. I recognize the need to advance my writing career. But how do I break free from this cycle of hesitation? After years of honing my craft, how can I finally muster the courage to submit my work? Here are some key factors that often keep writers paralyzed by fear:
Just Write Something
The Write Practice articulates this notion well: a blank page is often less intimidating than one filled with text. The best course of action is simply to dive in. I recall my university days when I would stare at a stack of textbooks, knowing that once I opened one, the reading would flow naturally.
Embrace Your Fear
It’s vital to recognize that fear is a completely normal emotional response. Accepting this fear can help you move forward. Many writers dread rejection or feel their work isn’t good enough to submit. It’s essential to overcome this mindset. Tom Beck, in an article for The Writing Cooperative, emphasizes that success lies beyond our comfort zones.
Learn from Rejections
Amanda Nicholson from Author Magazine reminds us that rejections are an inevitable part of the writing journey. Instead of viewing them negatively, consider each rejection a step closer to eventual acceptance. This positive outlook can motivate you to keep pushing forward.
Don't Take It Personally
Writing is deeply personal; we invest our hearts and souls into our work. When an article is rejected, it can overshadow all the positive feedback we've received. It’s crucial to remember that one rejection does not define your worth as a writer.
Embrace Imperfection
Start submitting your work and be prepared for rejection. Accepting your imperfections is a powerful step. Treat yourself with the kindness you would offer a friend in a similar situation.
Chapter 1.2: Moving Forward with Confidence
The first step in submitting your work is simply to write. This age-old advice is still relevant, and I often need reminding. Begin by jotting down your thoughts of the day; you might be surprised by what emerges. Remember, you are a writer!
Embrace your fears, learn from rejection, and don’t take anything too seriously. Enjoy the writing process!
