Mastering Your Mind: Overcoming the Urge to Quit
Written on
Understanding Why We Quit
Many individuals stop pursuing activities that benefit them, such as exercising, eating healthily, or learning new skills. Logically, most recognize these activities as beneficial. However, human behavior doesn't always follow logic.
At times, individuals feel bored or fatigued. Consistent workouts can seem monotonous in the short term. Yet, the long-term benefits—like improved health and reduced medical expenses—often outweigh the temporary dullness.
Another common reason for abandoning routines is getting sidetracked. A new, well-paying job that requires frequent travel can lead to neglecting personal relationships. What might seem like a short-term adjustment can gradually become a long-lasting habit.
Section 1.1 The Question of "Why"
It's essential to understand that overemphasizing "why" can lead to unnecessary self-reflection. While it may begin as harmless inquiry, it can quickly spiral into negative self-talk:
- "Why am I not good enough?"
- "I always mess things up."
- "I’m just not meant to be disciplined."
These thoughts are ultimately untrue. Instead, focusing on "how" can be far more beneficial. Mistakes happen to everyone; what truly matters is your response. The past is unchangeable, but your reaction is within your control.
Subsection 1.1.1 Shifting Focus to "How"
When you ask "why," you inadvertently reinforce reasons for quitting, making them more real. Conversely, asking "how" shifts your perspective toward solutions. Your mindset begins to seek resources and connections that can support your goals, helping you overcome justifications for stopping.
Section 1.2 The Power of Solutions
Reflect on how many times you've initiated a positive habit—be it journaling, meditation, reading, or exercising—only to abandon it despite the initial excitement. When you stopped, did you dwell on the "why" instead of the "how"?
