# The Transformative Impact of Mentorship on Careers and Teams
Written on
The Essence of Mentorship
Not long ago, a former colleague reached out to express her gratitude for the guidance I provided during the early stages of her career. I was both touched and surprised to learn that I had made a difference. At that time, it seemed instinctive to offer help to those in need—after all, isn’t that what we should do?
However, this is not always the reality.
As I have taken on more management and mentorship roles, my appreciation for the significance of genuine mentorship has deepened. Over the past twenty years, I’ve had the privilege of working with many remarkable individuals. While most are diligent and capable contributors to their organizations, only a few prioritize the growth of others. These exceptional individuals are the secret ingredient that transforms good organizations into outstanding ones.
If you’re fortunate enough to know people like Kathy McDonald, Ingrid Lindberg of Chief Customer, John Lescarbeau, or Allen Reed at Made, you understand the immense value they bring to their teams and the wider company ecosystem. Their influence is exponential; they not only enhance their immediate teams but also reach out to colleagues in other teams and even to competitors. They foster a workforce that is more robust, interconnected, and healthier.
To express my gratitude, I contacted some of my mentors from both the past and present, acknowledging the significant impact they have had on my career. However, I felt that mere thanks were insufficient. I wanted to ensure that the lessons I learned from them extended even further into the world.
Encouragement to Mentor
So, here’s my heartfelt request:
Identify someone in your life who could benefit from your mentorship. If you notice a new employee with the potential to make a significant impact, offer your support.
If you see a friend or colleague struggling at work, invite them to lunch—either in person or virtually—to lend a listening ear. They may simply need to vent, or they might be seeking the insights you’ve gained from your experiences.
When you encounter someone striving for more, share the wisdom you’ve acquired. You have valuable lessons to impart, and it’s your duty to pass them on to those eager to learn.
Sometimes, the inspiration we seek doesn’t need to come from within us. Often, there are individuals who exist to spark the potential in others, and that’s precisely what a mentor can accomplish.
So, take the time to be accessible to someone in need. It’s a powerful way to contribute to a future that is always on the rise. The seeds for a better tomorrow can be sown today.
