The Era of Transformation: Understanding Modern Changes

Written on

Chapter 1: The Evolution of Society Since 2007

Recently, I facilitated a discussion on Zoom, with another session scheduled for next week. As I prepare my presentation and some witty remarks, I emphasize a thesis: since 2007—the year I identify as the onset of the Fourth Industrial Revolution—human experiences in living, working, playing, eating, mating, communicating, and even dying have undergone substantial transformation. These shifts have occurred at an unprecedented pace, affecting more people globally than ever before in history.

The only comparable period would likely be the Second Industrial Revolution, which began in the 1870s. It was during this time that oil and electricity revolutionized the production and distribution of goods. The advent of electric lighting changed daily life for those who could afford it. However, the most significant invention was the internal combustion engine, which, by igniting oil-based fuel in confined spaces to create small explosions, revolutionized transport and labor. While these engines are still prevalent today, this is gradually changing, along with the pollution that accompanied them—an issue people were largely unaware of at the time.

From 1870 to 1940, society experienced considerable upheaval. Urban migration surged, with factories and skyscrapers rising, while air pollution took the place of horse manure as a primary public health concern. Additionally, African Americans, many of whom were recently freed from slavery, were striving for equality and prosperity. Unfortunately, the response was systematic oppression, including disenfranchisement.

These disruptions resulted in the collapse of much of the existing political and social structures. In the late 1800s, monarchies and aristocracies were still dominant, often intertwined through familial ties. New technologies widened the wealth gap significantly. Figures known as "Robber Barons," like the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, and Carnegies, amassed more power and influence than the government itself; for instance, J.P. Morgan famously had to rescue the U.S. Treasury.

A critical shift occurred when these innovations were adapted for warfare, culminating in the devastating attrition of World War I. This was followed by a brief period of excess, then the Great Depression, and ultimately, an even more destructive conflict that resulted in the annihilation of entire cities and the loss of millions of lives.

In the 21st century, it appears we have, so far, sidestepped the widespread conflicts that new technologies could incite. Although tensions are palpable globally, most conflicts are internal, particularly in countries like the U.S. The atmosphere is charged, with struggles predominantly involving those clinging to power versus those advocating for change and a more equitable power distribution.

What are these myriad changes and disruptions? This will be the focus of my next class, where I will delve deeper into these dynamics. While the nature of change remains consistent, its speed is unprecedented, with many individuals adopting new paradigms while others struggle to comprehend the evolving landscape. For some, the stakes are high as change threatens their way of life, while others find it challenging to adapt.

To conclude, I reiterate two poignant quotes that encapsulate our current epoch, despite one being from a century ago and the other from 1994:

“The old world is dying and the new world struggles to be born. Now is the time of monsters.” — Antonio Gramsci

“The future is already here. It just isn’t evenly distributed.” — William Gibson
